Student answer (Band 7.5)

The line graphs illustrate changes in the ownership of electrical appliances and the amount of time spent on housework per week in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.

Overall, ownership of all three appliances increased considerably, while the amount of time spent on housework declined significantly. Refrigerators became the most widely owned appliance, reaching 100% ownership, whereas vacuum cleaners were owned by approximately 75% of households in 2019.

In 1920, washing machines and vacuum cleaners were owned by around 40% and 30% of households respectively, while refrigerators were not owned by any households. Refrigerator ownership then rose rapidly, reaching 100% by 1980 and remaining at this level thereafter. Washing machine ownership also increased overall, despite some fluctuations, and reached 100% in 2019. Similarly, the proportion of households with vacuum cleaners increased, although it fluctuated throughout the period.

Meanwhile, the average time spent on housework fell steadily from 50 hours per week in 1920 to just 10 hours in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have clearly identified the main trends for both the ownership of appliances and the time spent on housework. The overview is concise and highlights the key inverse relationship between the two datasets. You have selected relevant data points, such as the 1920 starting figures and the 2019 endpoints, to support your summary. The comparison between the appliances is well-handled, and the inclusion of specific percentages adds necessary detail. To reach a higher band, ensure that all minor fluctuations mentioned are clearly supported by the data, as the description of 'fluctuations' for vacuum cleaners is accurate but could be more precisely linked to specific decades.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: the introduction/overview, the appliance trends, and the housework time trend. Cohesive devices such as 'meanwhile', 'similarly', and 'whereas' are used effectively to link sentences and clauses. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the information flows smoothly from one point to the next. The use of referencing is clear, and the structure allows the reader to follow the comparison without difficulty. The response is well-structured and easy to read throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases like 'increased considerably', 'declined significantly', and 'rose rapidly' demonstrate a good command of descriptive language. The use of 'fluctuations' and 'proportion of households' shows an awareness of academic style. While the vocabulary is accurate and appropriate for the task, it remains somewhat standard. To achieve a higher score, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or varied synonyms to describe trends, such as 'plateaued' or 'witnessed a steady decline', to demonstrate a wider, more flexible range of lexical items.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response displays a good variety of complex structures, such as the use of subordinate clauses ('while the amount of time spent on housework declined significantly') and participial phrases. The majority of sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is used correctly to manage the flow of information. There is a high level of control over grammatical forms, and the tense usage is consistent with the historical data provided. The writing is clear and professional, with no errors that impede communication. The range of structures is sufficient to support the clear presentation of data.
