Student answer (Band 6.5)

The two line graphs compares the ownership of electrical appliances: washing machine, refrigerator and vacuum cleaner and average number of housework per week in a country between 1920 ans 2019.

Overall, ownership substantially increased over the period while refrigerator and vacuum cleaner were the highest owned appliances. Amount of time spent in housework had experienced a downward trend.

In 1920, washing machine was the most owned with a proportion of 40% followed by vacuum cleaner with 30%. Conversely there were no homes with refrigerator. Refrigerator rose rapidly to 100% in 1980 and remained the same. Vacuum cleaner increased steadily to 90% in 1980 to 100% in 2000. Both refrigerator and vacuum cleaner became universal in households. Washing machine increased gradually, climbing from 40% to 60% in 1960 before dipping slightly to approximately 62% in 1980.

The second graph witnessed a dramatic decline. In 1920, individuals spent 50 hours a week for housework but the figure fell steadily to around 20 hours in 1960. After declining it reached 15 hours in both 1980 and 2000 year

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all parts of the task, providing a clear overview and selecting key features from both graphs. You successfully identified the main trends, such as the inverse relationship between appliance ownership and housework time. However, the analysis of the washing machine data is slightly inaccurate; you mentioned it climbed to 60% in 1960 before dipping, but the graph shows it reaching 70% by 1980. Additionally, the final data point for housework is not explicitly stated in the graph, so ensure you stick strictly to the provided visual information. Overall, the report is well-focused and meets the requirements for a clear, analytical summary.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from appliance ownership to the time spent on housework. You use some cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Conversely' and 'After declining'. However, the transition between the two graphs could be smoother, and some referencing is slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two distinct datasets. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words to connect sentences more fluidly rather than relying on simple conjunctions.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Phrases like 'substantially increased', 'downward trend', and 'became universal' are used effectively. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'average number of housework', which should be 'average amount of time spent on housework'. Additionally, there is a minor spelling error ('ans' instead of 'and'). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more precise academic collocations would elevate the response. The range is sufficient for the task, but lacks the sophistication required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'The two line graphs compares' (subject-verb agreement) and '2000 year' (missing preposition/article). You also have some issues with tense consistency and article usage, such as 'washing machine was the most owned' (should be 'the washing machine'). While these errors are present, they do not impede communication. To improve, ensure you proofread for subject-verb agreement and consistent use of articles when referring to specific trends or time periods.
