Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the score. Furthermore, the content is very limited; it fails to provide a clear overview of the trends and neglects to mention the second chart regarding the amount of time spent doing housework. The description of the data is superficial, focusing only on a few points rather than identifying the main features or making meaningful comparisons between the appliances over the 99-year period. To improve, you must ensure you address all parts of the prompt and provide a comprehensive summary of the data provided.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response lacks a clear structure. There is no introduction, overview, or logical progression of ideas. The paragraphing is non-existent, and the use of cohesive devices is minimal and mechanical, such as 'In 1st charts'. The lack of development makes it difficult to follow the information presented. To improve, you should organize your response into clear paragraphs: an introduction, an overview of the main trends, and specific details comparing the data. Use linking words like 'whereas', 'in contrast', or 'subsequently' to connect your ideas more effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is basic and repetitive. Phrases like 'large number of people that buy' and 'many people spend money in buying' are simplistic and lack the precision required for an Academic Task 1 report. There is no attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary related to data trends (e.g., 'fluctuated', 'peaked', 'remained steady'). To improve, focus on learning collocations related to charts and graphs, and try to use more precise verbs and nouns to describe the changes in the data over time.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains several grammatical errors, such as 'There are 2 charts that are given below which shows' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'In 1st charts' (missing article). The sentence structures are simple and repetitive, lacking the variety of complex structures needed for higher bands. There are also issues with punctuation and capitalization. To improve, focus on mastering subject-verb agreement and using a wider range of sentence structures, such as combining simple sentences into complex ones using relative clauses or subordinating conjunctions.
