Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the charts, identifying the trends in appliance ownership and the decline in housework hours. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. For example, the statement that ownership of refrigerators and vacuum cleaners 'remained same' between 2000 and 2019 is a misinterpretation of the data, which shows a plateau near 100%. Furthermore, the description of the washing machine trend lacks precision regarding the specific percentages reached. While the key trends are identified, the lack of accurate data points and the misreading of the final period limit the overall effectiveness of the summary.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical flow is hindered by awkward phrasing and mechanical transitions. Phrases like 'To be seen that' and 'Looking at the chart it can be seen that' are repetitive and do not effectively guide the reader through the data. The use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes inaccurate, such as the confusing transition 'dropped along with the time from 1920 to 1960'. While there is an overall attempt at structure, the progression of ideas lacks the sophistication required for a higher band.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate to convey the basic meaning but lacks the range and precision expected for this task. There is frequent repetition of basic verbs like 'increased', 'dropped', and 'remained'. Some word choices are unnatural, such as 'alteration in ownership' instead of 'changes in ownership' or 'quantity of time consumed' instead of 'amount of time spent'. There are also minor errors in word formation, such as 'se of washing machine' (likely a typo for 'use'). To improve, the student should incorporate more varied synonyms and precise collocations related to data description.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures, but grammatical errors are frequent and occasionally impede clarity. Examples include missing articles ('in country', 'use of refrigerator'), subject-verb agreement issues ('hours only fall'), and awkward sentence construction ('The numbers of hours dropped from 50 to 20 in 1920 to 1960'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with unnecessary spaces before periods. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar prevents the response from reaching a higher band.
