Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to address the task but fails to provide a complete overview. While it identifies some trends, it misses the second part of the prompt entirely: the 'amount of time spent doing housework'. By ignoring this data, the response is incomplete. Furthermore, the reporting of figures is often inaccurate or confusing, such as stating 'washing machines had around 0% of appliances', which is logically unclear. The summary provided at the end is too brief and fails to synthesize the main trends effectively. To improve, ensure all data sets provided in the prompt are analyzed and that the overview highlights the most significant overall trends rather than just listing individual data points.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response uses basic cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Thirdly' to structure the paragraphs. However, the logical progression is hindered by the repetitive and mechanical nature of these transitions. Paragraphing is present, but the internal flow of ideas is often disjointed due to grammatical errors and awkward phrasing. The referencing is sometimes unclear, such as the use of 'they' to refer to appliances, which creates ambiguity. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensuring that sentences within paragraphs are linked more naturally to create a smoother flow of information.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. There are frequent errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'desplaysthe', 'pf', 'accrued' (used incorrectly for 'occurred'), and 'digram'. The student relies on basic descriptors like 'increased' or 'remained constant' throughout. There is little evidence of the ability to use less common lexical items or precise collocations related to data description. To improve, the student should learn specific vocabulary for describing trends, such as 'soared', 'plateaued', or 'fluctuated', and pay closer attention to spelling and word formation to avoid distracting errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'the ratio of electrical appliances were jumped', 'there ware a dramatically increased', and 'the utilization pf electrical appliances were rosed'. The sentence structures are largely simple or contain errors when attempting more complex constructions. Subject-verb agreement is a consistent issue throughout the text. To improve, the student needs to focus on basic sentence construction, specifically ensuring correct verb tenses and subject-verb agreement. Practicing the difference between active and passive voice would also help in describing data more accurately.
