cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The first line chart illustrates the proportion of houses that were using 3 electrical appliances namely washing machine, refrigerators and vacuum cleaner. In contrast, the other line chart shows the number of working hours in a particular house per week from 1920 to 2019.

Overall, the purchasing of electrical appliances showed the upward trend throughout the given period. Refrigerators and vacuum cleaner were the most consumable appliances, while the washing machine increased over the period with small dip. In contrast, the working hours per week experienced declined over the given timeframe.

Refrigerators attracted the maximum number of townfolks, where the percentage rose sharply from 1920 to 1940 with almost 53%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the ability to fully address the task. While you have identified the main trends, the description is incomplete. You have only begun to describe the first chart and have completely omitted any detailed analysis of the second chart (housework hours) or a meaningful comparison between the two. To reach a higher band, you must provide a comprehensive overview of all data points and ensure the response is of sufficient length to allow for a full development of the information presented in the charts.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organised into an introduction, an overview, and a single body paragraph. While there is a logical attempt to structure the response, the abrupt ending and lack of development in the body paragraph hinder the overall progression. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In contrast' and 'Overall', but the limited length makes the flow feel disjointed. To improve, ensure that each main feature is supported by data and that the transition between the two charts is clearly articulated with more sophisticated linking phrases.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and range required for a higher score. Phrases like 'most consumable appliances' and 'townfolks' are either inaccurate or inappropriate for an academic report. You have attempted some topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'proportion' and 'upward trend', which is positive. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations related to data trends and avoid informal or imprecise terminology.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'the purchasing of electrical appliances showed the upward trend' (missing article) and 'experienced declined' (incorrect verb form). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence structure is somewhat repetitive. To achieve a higher band, you should aim for greater accuracy in verb tenses and article usage, and incorporate a wider variety of complex structures to describe the trends more fluently.
