cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The two charts compare the proportion of households that owned three electrical appliances and the average amount of time spent on the housework each week in a particular country from 1920 to 2019.

Overall, ownership of all three appliances increased considerably over the period. Although the growth of washing machine was less consistent. At the same time, the number of hours devoted to housework declined steadily. This suggests that the wider availability of households technology reduced the need of manual work.

In 1920, washing machines were owned by 40% of households, whereas vacuum cleaners were present in only 30% homes and refrigerators are almost absent. over the following years, ownership of all three appliances climbed sharply. Refrigerators and vacuum cleaners both reached 100% by around 2000, while washing machines rose gradually, ending at roughly 75% in 2019.

The trend in the housework moved in the opposite direction. Families spent around 50 hours per week on housework in 1920, but this figure declined sharply to 20 hours by 1960. After that, the declined was more gradual, the figure fell at approximately 10 hours a week by the end of the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered all three appliances and the housework time, making relevant comparisons between the two sets of data. The inclusion of specific data points, such as the 40% starting point for washing machines and the 10-hour mark for housework, demonstrates a good grasp of the information. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are accurate; for instance, the prompt implies refrigerators were at 0% in 1920, but you described them as 'almost absent'. Overall, the response is well-structured and addresses the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on distinct themes. You use cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'At the same time', and 'In 1920' to guide the reader through the information. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the appliance trends from the housework trends. To improve, ensure that transitions between sentences are slightly more varied to avoid a mechanical feel. For example, the shift to the second body paragraph could be smoother by using a more sophisticated linking phrase to contrast the two trends.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the trends accurately, using terms like 'climbed sharply', 'rose gradually', and 'declined steadily'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'households technology' instead of 'household technology' and 'the declined was' instead of 'the decline was'. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Incorporating more precise collocations or less common synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease' would enhance the sophistication of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'refrigerators are almost absent' (should be 'were') and 'reduced the need of manual work' (should be 'need for'). Additionally, the sentence 'Although the growth of washing machine was less consistent' is a fragment and should be connected to the following sentence. Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the majority of your sentences are structurally sound. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and preposition usage will help improve your accuracy.
