IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The line graphs illustrate the ownership changes of three electrical appliances namely- washing machine, refrigerator and vacuum cleaner, as well as hours spent per week doing house chores in a particular nation from 1920 to 2019.
Overall, while the ownership of refrigerator and vacuum cleaner increased sharply over the years, washing machine experienced mild fluctuations. Meanwhile, the number of time spent on housework decreased significantly throughout the years.
Even though refrigerator started off with zero ownership in 1920, it reached its peak at 100% in just 40 years and remined at this position till the end of the timeline. Similarly, vacuum cleaner accounted for 30% of households in 1920 and rose sharply to 100% in 2000, which continued in 2019 as well. On the other hand, despite beginning at the highest proportion (40%) in 1920, washing machine accounted for the lowest share at around 71% by the end of the timeline, before showing a slight drop to roughly 62% in 1980.
As the technology advanced with electrical home appliances, the number of hours spent for housework such as washing clothes, preparing meals and cleaning plummeted to nearly 10% only by 2019. It commenced at 50% in 1920 and experienced a sharp decline until 1960 (20%), with stable drops in the number in the following years.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered all three appliances and the housework time, making relevant comparisons, such as noting the inverse relationship between appliance ownership and time spent on chores. However, there is a slight inaccuracy in your description of the washing machine data; you mentioned it started at 40% and ended at 71%, but the graph shows it peaking around 1960 and then declining, which you noted, but the phrasing 'lowest share at around 71%' is slightly confusing given the context of the trend. Overall, the key features are well-selected and the response is well-developed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Meanwhile', 'On the other hand', and 'Similarly', to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the appliances from the housework time. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the information is presented in a way that is easy to follow. There are no significant issues with referencing or cohesion, making the text coherent throughout.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using terms like 'fluctuations', 'plummeted', and 'accounted for' appropriately. The language is generally precise and fits the academic tone required for Task 1. There are no major spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or varied ways to describe trends, such as 'witnessed a steady climb' or 'remained relatively stable'. Overall, your lexical control is strong and sufficient for the task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are error-free, and your control over tense and subject-verb agreement is consistent. There are minor slips, such as 'the number of time spent', which should be 'the amount of time spent', and 'remined' (a spelling error). Despite these occasional slips, the majority of your sentences are accurate, and your punctuation is generally correct. The grammatical range is sufficient to support clear communication of the data trends.
