cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line graphs illustrate the ownership changes of three electrical appliances, namely: washing machine, refrigerator and vacuum cleaner, as well as hours spent per week doing house chores in a particular nation from 1920 to 2019.

Overall, while the ownership of refrigerator and vacuum cleaner increased sharply over the years, washing machine experienced mild fluctuations. Meanwhile, the number of time spent on housework decreased significantly throughout the years.

Even though refrigerator started off with zero ownership in 1920, it reached its peak at 100% in just 40 years and remined at this position till the end of the timeline. Similarly, vacuum cleaner accounted for 30% of households in 1920 and rose sharply to 100% in 2000, which continued in 2019 as well. On the other hand, despite beginning at the highest proportion (40%) in 1920, washing machine accounted for the lowest share at around 71% by the end of the timeline, before showing a slight drop to roughly 62% in 1980.

As the technology advanced with electrical home appliances, the number of hours spent for housework such as washing clothes, preparing meals and cleaning plummeted to nearly 10% only by 2019. It commenced at 50% in 1920 and experienced a sharp decline until 1960 (20%), with stable drops in the number in the following years.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all key features of the charts, including the trends for the three appliances and the decline in housework hours. You have successfully identified the main trends and made relevant comparisons, such as noting the refrigerator's rapid rise to 100% and the inverse relationship between appliance ownership and housework time. However, there are some inaccuracies in data interpretation. For instance, you state the washing machine reached 71% by the end of the timeline, whereas the graph indicates it reached approximately 75%. Additionally, referring to the housework time as '10%' is slightly imprecise as the unit is 'hours per week', not a percentage. Despite these minor data errors, the overall summary is clear and well-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is smooth, and you use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'Meanwhile', 'Even though', 'Similarly', and 'On the other hand' to link your points effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the appliance data from the housework data. The referencing is generally clear, though the transition between the appliance trends and the housework trend could be slightly more refined to emphasize the correlation between the two sets of data more explicitly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases like 'accounted for', 'mild fluctuations', 'plummeted', and 'commenced' are used effectively to describe trends. There are a few minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'number of time spent' (should be 'amount of time') and 'remined' (spelling error). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more sophisticated synonyms for 'increased' or 'decreased' would help elevate the score. Overall, the lexical range is good and allows for clear communication of the data.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response shows a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use complex sentences effectively, such as 'Even though refrigerator started off with zero ownership in 1920, it reached its peak...'. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'the number of time spent' and 'remined at this position', but these do not impede communication. Punctuation is generally accurate, and the sentence variety is sufficient for this task. To reach a higher band, ensure consistent subject-verb agreement and check for minor spelling errors, as these occasional slips prevent the writing from being fully error-free.
