Student answer (Band 6.0)

The figures illustrate the relation between the rising use of electrical appliances with the time spent performing household works in a country. The first figure gives information about the proportion of households owning appliances like Washing machine, Refrigerator and Vacuum cleaner, while the second figure shows the change in number of hours spent doing housework per week for a house. Both charts are drawn for an interval of 20 years from 1920 to 2019.

Overall, the percentage of homes with appliances rose up throughout the years and in response to it, the time spent in carrying out household work has decreased significantly.

Washing machine was owned by only 40% of houses in 1920 and reached to about 75% in 2019 after ups and downs. Refrigerator, which was owned by near to none houses rose significantly and present now in all houses since 1980. And Vacuum cleaner which started at 30% in 1920 increased linearly to reach 100% in 2000.

People spent 50 hours weekly in 1920 to perform household activities, which decreased throughout the year to about 10 hours in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all key features of the charts, including the trends for appliance ownership and the decline in housework hours. You have successfully identified the main trends and made relevant comparisons. However, the analysis is somewhat brief. For instance, the description of the washing machine trend as having 'ups and downs' is vague; specifying the periods of fluctuation would have provided a more detailed overview. Additionally, the statement that refrigerators were 'present now in all houses since 1980' is slightly inaccurate based on the chart, which shows a plateau rather than a perfect 100% saturation. To reach a higher band, ensure that data points are cited more precisely and that the overview clearly synthesises the relationship between the two charts.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organised into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from general trends to specific appliance data and then to the housework hours. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Overall' and 'while', to link ideas. However, the transition between the appliance data and the housework data is abrupt. The use of referencing could be improved; for example, 'in response to it' is a bit mechanical. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that guides the reader through the data.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly, using terms like 'proportion', 'interval', and 'linearly'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'household works' should be 'housework' or 'household tasks', and 'near to none houses' is non-standard phrasing. The phrase 'rose up throughout the years' is slightly redundant. To achieve a higher score, focus on using more precise academic collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing. Expanding your range to include more sophisticated synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease' would also be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors. For instance, 'reached to about 75%' is incorrect; it should be 'reached about 75%'. There are also issues with articles, such as 'Washing machine was owned by...' which should be 'The washing machine...'. Additionally, 'decreased throughout the year' should be 'decreased throughout the period'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles to improve your accuracy.
