Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the main trends in appliance ownership and housework hours. However, the analysis is somewhat mechanical and lacks a clear, analytical overview. For instance, the statement that the washing machine was the 'highest' in 1920 is inaccurate based on the provided data, as it was clearly lower than other categories. The description of the trends is largely a list of figures rather than a synthesis of the data. To improve, focus on grouping data points logically and ensuring that the overview highlights the most significant trends, such as the inverse relationship between appliance ownership and housework time.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To begin with' and 'In the year 1920', but they are sometimes used in a repetitive or slightly mechanical way. The progression of ideas is generally clear, although the transition between the appliance data and the housework data could be smoother. Referencing is mostly clear, though some sentences are slightly disjointed due to grammatical errors, which occasionally affects the flow of information.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There is frequent reliance on basic verbs like 'rise', 'fall', and 'reached'. Some word choices are awkward or incorrect, such as 'stabled' instead of 'stabilised' or 'levelled off', and 'started period' instead of 'the beginning of the period'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main points, it does not demonstrate the flexibility or sophistication required for a higher band score. Using more precise reporting verbs and nouns would enhance the quality of the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'which was continue to rose' (incorrect verb tense and passive voice usage), 'it fallen around 65%' (missing auxiliary verb), and 'which was rise significantly' (incorrect verb form). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the misuse of verb tenses and subject-verb agreement is consistent throughout the text. To reach a higher band, focus on mastering basic tense consistency and ensuring that complex structures are formed accurately.
