IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line graphs compare the proportion of household with electrical appliances such as washing machine, refrigerator and vacuum cleaner and the number of hour of household spent using these appliances in housework in a country from 1920 to 2019.
Overall, it is clear that the appliance which experienced a sharp growth was refrigerator over the period which was least popular in the households at the beginning. In contrast, washing machine showed a steady growth during these 100 years. Furthermore, the amount of time spent doing housework declined substantially.
Regarding the electrical appliances, refrigerator was at the bottom of the trend around 0% of households in 1920 which peaked briefly before levelling off at 100% in 1980. In 1920, about 30% of households had vacuum machine which rose sharply to 100% in 2000. Then, it levelled off at this figure. Finally, washing machine which was the most popular choice in 1920 recorded a positive growth and reached about 75% in 2019.
In 1920, 50 hours per week were spent in a household doing household chores. However, the figure fell sharply to 10 hours in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered all parts of the task, including the appliance ownership percentages and the decline in housework hours. However, the analysis could be improved by making more direct comparisons between the two graphs. For instance, you could have explicitly linked the rise in appliance ownership to the significant drop in hours spent on housework. While the key features are highlighted, some data points, such as the specific percentages for the washing machine in 1920, could be more precisely described to fully satisfy the requirements for a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Furthermore', and 'Regarding' to guide the reader through the information. However, the transition between the appliance data and the housework hours is somewhat abrupt. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the flow could be enhanced by using more sophisticated linking phrases to connect the two distinct datasets. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the information is easy to follow throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'steady growth', and 'levelling off' effectively. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'vacuum machine' instead of 'vacuum cleaner' and 'number of hour' instead of 'number of hours'. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the variety and sophistication required for the higher bands, remaining somewhat functional rather than expressive.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is generally effective. However, there are several grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('the proportion of household' should be 'households') and subject-verb agreement issues ('refrigerator was at the bottom... which was least popular'). Additionally, some phrasing is slightly awkward, such as 'number of hour of household spent'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for articles and pluralization would significantly improve your accuracy.
