IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The line graphs compare the proportion of households with electrical appliances such as washing machine, refrigerator and vacuum cleaner and the number of hours of household spent using these appliances in housework in a country from 1920 to 2019.
Overall, it is clear that the appliance which experienced a sharp growth was the refrigerator over the period which was least popular in the households at the beginning. In contrast, washing machine showed a steady growth during these 100 years. Furthermore, the amount of time spent doing housework declined substantially.
Regarding the electrical appliances, refrigerator was at the bottom of the trend around 0% of households in 1920 which peaked briefly before levelling off at 100% in 1980. In 1920, about 30% of households had vacuum machine which rose sharply to 100% in 2000. Then, it levelled off at this figure. Finally, washing machine which was the most popular choice in 1920 recorded a positive growth and reached about 75% in 2019.
In 1920, 50 hours per week were spent in a household doing household chores. However, the figure fell sharply to 10 hours in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all key features of the charts, including the trends for appliance ownership and the decline in housework hours. You have successfully identified the main trends and made relevant comparisons, such as contrasting the sharp rise of the refrigerator with the steady growth of the washing machine. However, the overview could be more precise; for instance, mentioning that all three appliances reached high levels of ownership by the end of the period would strengthen the summary. The data is generally accurate, though ensure that all figures cited are clearly linked to the specific years provided in the prompt to avoid any ambiguity.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for appliances and time spent. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices like 'Furthermore', 'In contrast', and 'Regarding', which help to link your points. However, the transition between the appliance data and the housework time data is a bit abrupt. To improve, you could use a more sophisticated linking phrase to connect the rise in appliance ownership to the reduction in housework time, as these two trends are clearly related in the context of the prompt.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information clearly, using terms like 'proportion', 'steady growth', and 'levelling off'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'vacuum machine' (should be 'vacuum cleaner') and 'number of hours of household spent' (which is slightly awkward phrasing). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more precise academic collocations would elevate the response. You avoid repetition well, but ensure that technical terms are used accurately to maintain a professional tone throughout the report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While most sentences are clear, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'the appliance which experienced a sharp growth was the refrigerator over the period which was least popular' (which is slightly convoluted) and missing articles (e.g., 'in a household'). The punctuation is generally correct, and the errors present do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, aim for more varied complex structures and ensure consistent subject-verb agreement and article usage throughout the text.
