IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The combination of line graphs illustrates information about proportion of households with electrical appliances and count of hours of housework per week, per household during 1920- 2019.
Firstly, the highest element of the graph is refrigerator, approximately 100% of people use this in 2000. Followed by, during 2019, almost 98% public use vacuum cleaner. However, in 1920, proportion of refrigerator is zero. Moreover, 40% of houses utilise washing machine in 1920.
Furthermore, the maximum hours spent on housework is 50 hours approximately in 1920. In addition, during 1960, almost 20 hours were spent on household talks. In contrast, the minimum hours were spent in 2019, which is near about 10 hours. Another notable point is that, nearly 30 hours spent on household tasks during 1940.
Overall, it is clear that the proportion of households owning electrical appliances increased significantly over the periods, also the number of hours spent on household task, per week declined dramatically throughout the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the charts, identifying the trends for both appliance ownership and housework hours. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. For instance, the description of the refrigerator trend is slightly inaccurate (it does not start at zero in 1920 according to the data provided) and the reporting of figures is sometimes disjointed. While the overview is present, it lacks a more sophisticated synthesis of the relationship between the two datasets. To reach a higher band, you should focus on grouping data more logically and ensuring that comparisons between the two graphs are more explicit rather than just listing data points.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear overall progression. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Furthermore', and 'In contrast' to link ideas. However, the use of these devices is occasionally mechanical, and the flow between sentences can feel a bit choppy. The referencing is sometimes unclear, such as in the second paragraph where the transition between appliances is abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus would enhance the coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing you to convey the main trends. You use terms like 'proportion', 'significantly', and 'declined dramatically' appropriately. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'household talks' instead of 'household tasks' and 'public' instead of 'households'. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive. To improve, try to incorporate more precise terminology related to data description, such as 'fluctuated', 'plateaued', or 'a steady increase', and ensure that your word choices are contextually accurate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('the' refrigerator) and incorrect preposition usage ('proportion of refrigerator is zero'). Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'the highest element of the graph is refrigerator'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles will help improve your accuracy.
