Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the charts, identifying the trends in appliance ownership and the decline in housework hours. However, the reporting is inconsistent. For instance, the description of the vacuum cleaner is vague ('reached it peak growth rate') without providing the specific data point. The overview is also somewhat repetitive and lacks a clear synthesis of the relationship between the two charts. While the key trends are identified, the lack of precision in data reporting and the somewhat disjointed presentation of information limit the score. To improve, ensure all key data points are clearly stated and the overview provides a more cohesive summary of the overall trends.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is often mechanical and repetitive. The use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes awkward, such as the repeated use of 'At a fleeting glance' to start paragraphs, which is not an appropriate academic transition. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the flow between sentences is frequently interrupted by grammatical errors. While there is an attempt at logical sequencing, the lack of variety in linking words and the repetitive structure of the paragraphs hinder the overall coherence. Improving the range of cohesive devices and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would significantly enhance the readability of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The range of vocabulary is limited and often imprecise. Phrases like 'extreme good level', 'down growth rate', and 'little bit down' are informal and lack the academic tone required for Task 1. There is also evidence of word-choice errors, such as using 'uses' as a noun instead of 'usage' or 'ownership'. While the meaning is generally clear, the vocabulary lacks the flexibility and precision needed for a higher band. To improve, focus on using more precise academic collocations and avoiding informal or repetitive phrasing. Expanding your repertoire of reporting verbs and trend-related vocabulary will help you convey information more effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow of reading. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement ('The charts indicates'), article usage, and tense consistency ('it had came to low'). The sentence structures are mostly simple or contain errors when attempting more complex forms. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing after commas. While the meaning is usually understandable, the high frequency of errors across basic and complex structures prevents a higher score. Focusing on fundamental grammar rules, such as verb tenses and pluralisation, will help improve the accuracy and professional quality of your writing.
