Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main trends, but the analysis is somewhat superficial and lacks a clear, cohesive overview. While you identify the general increase in appliance ownership and the decrease in housework hours, the reporting of data is inconsistent. For example, you mention specific percentages for washing machines but omit them for other appliances, and the description of the trends is occasionally inaccurate (e.g., stating refrigerator ownership remained the same from 1980 to 2019, which is a reasonable observation, but the overall summary lacks a comparative synthesis). To improve, ensure you group data logically and provide a more comprehensive comparison between the two charts.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical flow is disrupted by awkward phrasing and mechanical transitions. Phrases like 'At a fleeting glance' and 'Moving ahead' are used somewhat unnaturally. The referencing is occasionally unclear, and the connection between sentences is often abrupt. While there is an attempt to use cohesive devices, they are not always used flexibly or accurately. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider range of linking words that naturally connect your ideas and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus that contributes to the overall progression of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, often relying on basic verbs like 'increased' or 'grew'. There are also instances of incorrect word choice, such as 'alters' instead of 'changes', 'calibrated' used incorrectly, and 'remissly' which does not fit the context. The range is sufficient to convey the basic meaning, but it lacks the precision and variety required for higher bands. To improve, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for trends (e.g., 'surged', 'plummeted', 'stabilised') and ensure that words are used in their correct collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are issues with subject-verb agreement ('refrigerator uses enhanced', 'Refrigerators was mostly used'), missing articles, and incorrect punctuation (e.g., '2010it'). The sentence structures are mostly simple, and attempts at more complex sentences are often marred by errors. To improve, focus on basic accuracy, particularly with pluralisation and verb tenses. Ensure that you proofread for small slips like missing spaces after periods and incorrect verb forms, as these errors are frequent throughout the text.
