Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given line graphs provide information about the fluctuations in percentage of households with electrical appliances as well as number of hours spent on household chores per week, in a country from 1920 to 2019.
Overall, it is clear that the proportion of households that had electrical appliances increased considerably over the century, whilst the number of hours of housework per week gradually decreased over the years.
The percentage of families with vacuum cleaners had a rapid growth from 30% in 1920 to 90% by 1980 , but it remained stable and reached peak of 100% by 2019. The same statistics can also be seen for the proportion of individuals with refrigerator, as it increased most to around 1% to 90% from 1920 to 1960. Both appliances were used by 100% of households in 2019.
Looking at the other statistics, the proportion of families with washing machine had increased steadily to 40% to 70% by 1960, then it slight fell before rose gradually to about 74% by 2019. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all key features of the charts, including the trends for appliances and the inverse trend for housework hours. The overview is clear and highlights the main contrast between the two sets of data. However, there are some inaccuracies in the data reporting; for instance, the text states the refrigerator ownership increased from 1% to 90% between 1920 and 1960, whereas the chart shows it starting at 0% and reaching 50% by 1960. Additionally, the description of the washing machine trend is slightly confusing regarding the specific percentages. Despite these minor data inaccuracies, the main trends are well-identified and the response is well-structured.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'whilst', 'Meanwhile', and 'then' are used effectively to guide the reader through the information. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different categories of data. The progression of ideas is clear, and the relationship between the appliances and the time spent on housework is well-managed. The text flows smoothly, and the referencing is generally clear throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, with some attempts at using more precise terminology such as 'fluctuations', 'proportion', 'considerably', and 'consistently'. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'it slight fell before rose gradually' (should be 'it fell slightly before rising gradually') and 'the same statistics can also be seen' (which is slightly imprecise). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, particularly with verb forms and prepositions, such as 'it slight fell before rose gradually' and 'the proportion of families with washing machine had increased steadily to 40% to 70%'. The use of articles is also inconsistent in places. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. More attention to verb tense consistency and accurate prepositional usage would improve the grammatical accuracy.
