Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given line graphs provide information about the fluctuations in percentage of households with electrical appliances as well as number of hours spent on household chores per week, in a country from 1920 to 2019.
Overall, it is clear that the proportion of households that had electrical appliances increased considerably over the century, whilst the number of hours of housework per week gradually decreased over the years.
The percentage of families with vacuum cleaners had a rapid growth from 30% in 1920 to 90% by 1980 , but it remained stable and reached peak of 100% by 2019. The same statistics can also be seen for the proportion of individuals with refrigerator, as it increased most to around 1% to 90% from 1920 to 1960. Both appliances were used by 100% of households in 2019.
Looking at the other statistics, the proportion of families with washing machine had increased steadily to 40% to 70% by 1960, then it slight fell before rose gradually to about 74% by 2019. Meanwhile, amount of time spent on housework dropped consistently from 50 hours per week in 1920 to roughly 10 hours per week by end of the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all key features of the charts, including the trends for appliances and the inverse relationship with housework hours. The overview is clear and highlights the main trends effectively. However, there are some inaccuracies in data reporting; for instance, the refrigerator data is described as increasing from 1% to 90% between 1920 and 1960, which is a misinterpretation of the provided visual data. Additionally, the description of the washing machine trend is slightly confusing regarding the specific percentages mentioned. Despite these minor data inaccuracies, the response successfully identifies the main trends and makes relevant comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on different aspects of the data. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'whilst', 'Looking at the other statistics', and 'Meanwhile' are used to guide the reader through the information. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different categories of data. The progression of ideas is generally smooth, although the transition between the refrigerator data and the washing machine data could be slightly more refined to improve the flow of the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, using terms like 'fluctuations', 'proportion', 'considerably', and 'consistently'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'it slight fell before rose gradually' (should be 'it fell slightly before rising gradually') and 'the same statistics can also be seen for the proportion of individuals with refrigerator' (should be 'households' rather than 'individuals'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey meaning, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'it slight fell before rose gradually' and 'amount of time spent on housework dropped' (missing the article 'the'). Additionally, there are issues with preposition usage and verb tense consistency, such as 'reached peak of 100%' (missing 'a'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher band score. The student demonstrates an attempt at complex structures, but control over these is inconsistent.
