cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The line graph represents the data of a certain nation in a time period from 1920 to 2019 that how often do the possession of different household objects change and additionally, how much time do they give on home chores.

Overall, it is evident that vacuum cleaner is the one object which is mostly exchanged whereas, washing machine on other hand is considerably less replaced appliance. Moreover, at the start of the period less time was given to housework, but it has changed quite a lot.

Firstly, in 1920 refrigerator's ownership change was almost zero but, as time continued the percentage just went up and now almost 100% of appliance's ownership changes. Meanwhile vacuum cleaner was already at an exchange rate of 30% and by time it also reached an absolute 100%. On the other hand, washing machine was only an only object which has a ratio of 40% more than others, but it didn't reach that high.

Secondly, in 1920 50% of their time was given to household chores but as time passed the numbers went down at an alarming rate. And in now 2019 when life has become so much busy people spend zero-time housework like washing clothes, preparing meals and cleaning etc.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response attempts to summarise the data but suffers from significant misinterpretation of the graph. You describe the trends as 'ownership changes' or 'exchange rates', whereas the graph clearly tracks the 'percentage of households with electrical appliances'. Furthermore, the claim that housework time reached 'zero' in 2019 is factually incorrect based on the provided chart, which shows a decline to approximately 10 hours. Because the data is misinterpreted, the main features are not accurately reported. To improve, ensure you carefully read the axis labels and legend before writing to avoid misrepresenting the information provided.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use some cohesive devices like 'Overall', 'Firstly', and 'Meanwhile' to link ideas. However, the progression of ideas is sometimes hindered by the inaccurate interpretation of the data. The referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'the one object which is mostly exchanged', which is confusing because the graph does not show exchange rates. The use of linking words is generally functional, but the logical flow is weakened by the factual errors in the content.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision required for a higher band. You rely on repetitive phrasing such as 'ownership change' and 'time was given'. There are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as using 'exchanged' to describe appliance ownership. While you attempt to use some descriptive language, the lack of precise terminology related to data trends (e.g., 'fluctuated', 'plateaued', 'declined steadily') limits your score. Expanding your range of topic-specific vocabulary would significantly improve the quality of your report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'how often do the possession... change' (incorrect word order in an indirect question) and 'washing machine on other hand is considerably less replaced appliance' (missing articles). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some unnecessary commas and missing ones in complex sentences. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to suggest a lack of control over more complex grammatical forms.
