Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The line graphs illustrate the use of electrical appliances by different users and amount of time spent doing chores in a country from 1920 to 2019.
Overall, it is evident that the proportions of households with electronics experienced upward trends, while the amount of time spent by single house per week faced a downward trend. The usage of refrigerator shot up although there were extremely small proportions of houses using it.
At the beginning of the period, the number of households using washing machine had the highest number of 40%, which increased substantially to 70% by 1960. The percentage of households dipped slightly before increasing considerably to just above 70% in 2019. Although the percentage of vacuum cleaner was low at the beginning compared to washing machine but it's percentage overtook the proportion of washing machine and became the second most used appliance.
Refrigerator percentage rate started off at just above 0% and jumped up to 100% in 1980, afterwards it's percentage remained the same. While vacuum cleaner percentage started off at 30% and finished off at 100% in 2000 and afterwards.
The number of hours spent per week declined sharply from 50% to 20% by 1960, thereafter it decreased slightly and eventually reached to 10% at the end of the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all parts of the task, providing a clear overview and highlighting key trends. You successfully identified the main features, such as the inverse relationship between appliance ownership and housework time. However, the analysis is slightly hampered by inaccurate data reporting; for instance, you state that housework time declined from '50% to 20%', whereas the chart measures hours, not percentages. Additionally, the description of the refrigerator trend as 'extremely small proportions' at the start is slightly vague. To reach a higher band, ensure that data points are cited with greater precision and that units of measurement are correctly identified from the axes.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is generally smooth, and you use some cohesive devices like 'At the beginning of the period' and 'thereafter' to link information. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'Although the percentage of vacuum cleaner was low... but it's percentage overtook...'. The use of 'but' after 'although' is a grammatical error that also disrupts the flow of the sentence. Improving the variety of linking words would enhance the overall cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'substantially', 'considerably', and 'downward trend' effectively. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'single house' instead of 'per household' and 'finished off' which is slightly informal for an academic report. Additionally, there is a recurring issue with possessive pronouns (e.g., 'it's percentage' instead of 'its percentage'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on precise collocations and avoiding informal phrasing will improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. For example, 'the number of households using washing machine had the highest number of 40%' is redundant and grammatically awkward. You also struggle with subject-verb agreement and possessive forms, such as 'it's percentage' and 'vacuum cleaner percentage' (missing articles). While the meaning remains clear, the frequency of these minor errors limits the score. Increasing the number of error-free sentences through careful proofreading would significantly improve your performance.
