Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line graphs illustrate the use of electrical appliances by different users and the amount of time spent doing chores in a country from 1920 to 2019.
Overall, it is evident that the proportions of households with electronics experienced upward trends, while the amount of time spent by each household per week faced a downward trend. The usage of refrigerator shot up although there were extremely small proportions of houses using it.
At the beginning of the period, the number of households using washing machine had the highest number of 40%, which increased substantially to 70% by 1960. The percentage of households dipped slightly before increasing considerably to just above 70% in 2019. Although the percentage of vacuum cleaners was low at the beginning compared to a washing machine but its percentage overtook the proportion of washing machine and became the second most used appliance.
Refrigerator percentage rate started off at just above 0% and jumped up to 100% in 1980, afterwards its percentage remained the same. While vacuum cleaners percentage started off at 30% and finished off at 100% in 2000 and afterwards.
The number of hours spent per week declined sharply from 50% to 20% by 1960, thereafter it decreased slightly and eventually reached to 10% at the end of the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all parts of the task, providing a clear overview and highlighting key trends. You successfully identified the main features, such as the upward trend in appliance ownership and the decline in hours spent on housework. However, the analysis is slightly hampered by inaccuracies in data reporting. For instance, you state that the refrigerator started at 'just above 0%' and reached 100% in 1980, but the graph shows it starting at a much higher point (around 20-30%) and reaching 100% later. Additionally, describing the hours spent as '50% to 20%' is incorrect, as the y-axis for that chart represents hours, not percentages. Ensuring data accuracy is crucial for a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'At the beginning of the period,' 'Although,' and 'thereafter,' which help guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the use of referencing could be more precise. For example, the transition between the discussion of washing machines and vacuum cleaners is slightly abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'substantially,' 'considerably,' and 'declined sharply.' There are some instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'refrigerator percentage rate' and 'finished off at 100%,' which sound slightly informal or unnatural. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid repetitive structures. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main points, it lacks the flexibility and sophistication required for the higher bands. Focus on using more academic synonyms for common verbs and adjectives.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'the number of households using washing machine' (missing an article) and 'reached to 10%' (unnecessary preposition). Additionally, the sentence 'Although the percentage of vacuum cleaners was low at the beginning compared to a washing machine but its percentage overtook...' contains a redundant conjunction ('although' and 'but'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of complex sentence connectors.
