cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The line graphs illustrate the use of electrical appliances by different users and the amount of time spent doing chores in a country from 1920 to 2019.

Overall, it is evident that the proportions of households with electronics experienced upward trends, while the amount of time spent by each household per week faced a downward trend. The usage of the refrigerator reached a plateau, although there were extremely small proportions of houses using it.

At the beginning of the period, the number of households using washing machine had the highest number of 40%, which increased substantially to 70% by 1960. The percentage of households dipped slightly before increasing considerably to just above 70% in 2019. Although the percentage of vacuum cleaners was low at the beginning compared to a washing machine, its percentage overtook the proportion of washing machine and became the second most used appliance.

Refrigerator percentage rate started off at just above 0% and jumped up to 100% in 1980, afterwards its percentage remained the same. While vacuum cleaners percentage started off at 30% and ended up at 100% in 2000 and afterwards.

The number of hours spent on housework per week declined sharply from 50 hours to 20 hours by 1960, thereafter it decreased slightly and eventually reached 10 hours at the end of the period.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all key features of the charts, including the trends for appliance ownership and the decline in housework hours. You have successfully identified the main trends and made relevant comparisons between the appliances. However, there is a slight inaccuracy in your description of the refrigerator data; you mention it started at 'just above 0%' and reached 100% in 1980, but the graph shows it starting at a higher point (around 10-15%) in 1920. Additionally, the description of the vacuum cleaner overtaking the washing machine is clear, but ensure your data points are precise to avoid minor misinterpretations of the visual information.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group the appliances and the housework hours separately. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices such as 'although', 'while', and 'thereafter' to link sentences. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be improved by ensuring that the comparison between appliances is more tightly integrated. The use of referencing (e.g., 'its percentage') is generally clear, but ensure that the antecedents are always unambiguous to improve the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with some precision, using terms like 'reached a plateau', 'dipped slightly', and 'declined sharply'. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, though some phrasing is slightly repetitive (e.g., 'percentage' is used very frequently). To reach a higher band, try to vary your nouns and verbs to describe trends, such as using 'proportion', 'figure', or 'rate' interchangeably, and employing more sophisticated collocations to describe the speed or extent of the changes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free, though there are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'the number of households using washing machine' (should be 'a washing machine' or 'washing machines') and 'vacuum cleaners percentage' (should be 'the percentage of vacuum cleaners'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do prevent the writing from being considered fully accurate. Focus on article usage and possessive structures to improve your control.
