Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response covers the main features of the charts, but there are significant inaccuracies in the interpretation of the data. For instance, the student describes the 'time spent on refrigerator' as having a 'dramatical climb', whereas the graph actually tracks the ownership of appliances, not the time spent on them. The description of the trends is often confused, mixing up the two different graphs (ownership vs. hours of housework). While the main features are identified, the lack of clarity and the misinterpretation of the data labels prevent a higher score. The overview is present but lacks precision regarding the specific trends shown in the provided charts.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate, such as 'After analyzing the given data' and 'Further more'. The progression of ideas is sometimes illogical because the student confuses the two distinct datasets (ownership percentages vs. hours spent). Referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult to determine which specific line or trend is being discussed. While there is an overall attempt at a logical flow, the lack of precision in linking the data to the correct graph hinders the coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The range of vocabulary is limited and repetitive. There are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'dramatical climb' (should be 'dramatic increase') and 'gadget' (which is too informal for an Academic Task 1). The student struggles to use precise terminology to describe trends, relying on basic descriptors. Spelling errors, such as 'mashing' instead of 'machine', also occur. While the meaning is generally conveyed, the lack of sophisticated vocabulary and the presence of word-choice errors limit the score to a 5.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Issues include subject-verb agreement ('washing machine have shown', 'vacuum cleaner utilization rise'), incorrect article usage, and punctuation errors. The sentence 'In 1960 washing machine and vacuum cleaner have same time spent' is grammatically weak and lacks necessary articles. While the errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable and detract from the overall quality of the writing. A greater focus on basic grammatical accuracy is required.
