Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response covers the main features of the charts, but there are significant inaccuracies in data reporting. For instance, you mention '90 million' for vacuum cleaners and '50 million' for hours, which are not supported by the provided data. Additionally, the description of the trends is sometimes confusing, such as stating refrigerator ownership was 0 percent in 1920 when the chart indicates a starting point above 0. While you attempt to summarize the information, the misinterpretation of the data units and values prevents a clear overview. To improve, ensure you carefully read the axes and labels of the charts before writing.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use basic cohesive devices like 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'Secondly' to transition between points. However, the progression of ideas is sometimes mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear. For example, the transition between the first graph (appliances) and the second graph (hours) is abrupt. Improving the use of linking words to show relationships between the data points rather than just listing them would enhance the flow and coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. You rely on basic terms like 'increased', 'showed', and 'declines'. There are also some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'fluctuated ratios' and 'trend go upward'. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more precise vocabulary related to describing trends, such as 'surged', 'plummeted', 'gradual increase', or 'remained constant'. Additionally, ensure you use the correct terminology for the data presented (e.g., percentages vs. absolute numbers).

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include 'refrigerators ownership was' (should be 'refrigerator ownership'), 'percentage of washing machines were' (subject-verb agreement error), and 'trend go upward' (tense error). Punctuation and article usage also need attention. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to affect the overall clarity of your report. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
