Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the task by identifying the main trends in appliance ownership and housework hours. However, the analysis is hampered by significant inaccuracies in data reporting. For example, stating that refrigerator ownership increased by 90% between 1920 and 1960 is a misinterpretation of the data. Furthermore, the description of housework hours is somewhat repetitive and lacks a clear, analytical overview. While the main features are identified, the lack of precision in reporting the figures and the failure to provide a clear summary of the overall trends prevent a higher score. To improve, ensure that data points are accurately transcribed and that the overview highlights the most significant relationships between the two charts.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organised into two paragraphs, which is appropriate for a report. However, the progression of ideas is often disjointed. The use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes mechanical, such as the repetitive use of 'in 1920' and 'it was increased'. There are instances where the connection between sentences is unclear, making the flow of information somewhat choppy. To improve, use a wider variety of linking words and phrases to connect ideas more fluidly, and ensure that each paragraph has a clear focus, such as grouping appliances together and contrasting them with the housework data.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic verbs like 'increased' and 'have'. There are several errors in word choice and form, such as 'household things' instead of 'household appliances', 'getted increased' (a non-standard verb form), and 'Vaccum' (spelling error). The range of vocabulary is insufficient to convey the information with precision or sophistication. To improve, focus on using a broader range of reporting verbs (e.g., 'rose', 'climbed', 'fluctuated') and nouns related to data description (e.g., 'proportion', 'percentage', 'trend').
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Issues include subject-verb agreement ('This Charts indicated', 'people does not know'), incorrect verb tenses, and awkward sentence structures ('in 1920 using refrigerator in rare'). There is a lack of complex sentence structures, and the punctuation is inconsistent. The errors are frequent and systematic, particularly regarding verb forms and prepositions. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring subject-verb agreement, and practicing the correct use of past tense verbs when describing historical data.
