Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line charts depict the percentage of electrical appliances owners and the time they were used in housework and households in a country over a century from 1920 to 2019.

Overall, the ownership is increased over the time and the number of hours people reduced significantly.

To begin with, washing machine was the most popular appliance in first fourty years of the time accounted for 40% in 1920 and 60% in 1940, while refrigerator had no user in 1920, but it increased dramatically in the next 20 years, accounted for 55%, after that it remained on top during the rest of the period. In 1960, around 70% of washing machines and refrigerators were in used but a dip of 8% can be seen in 1980, whereas an increase of 20% observed during the same period of time.

On the other hand, people worked 50 hours per week in 1920s, when electrical appliances were introducted, number of hours decreased by 15% in 1940. Similarly, same pattern can be seen during 1940 to 1960. In the end, numbers remained almost static during the last 60 years of the time.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the charts, identifying the general trends in appliance ownership and the inverse relationship with housework time. However, the analysis is somewhat inconsistent. For instance, the description of the 1960-1980 period is confusingly phrased, and the claim that refrigerator ownership 'remained on top' is not fully supported by the data provided. The overview is present but could be more precise regarding the specific trends. To reach a higher band, ensure that data points are accurately interpreted and that the comparison between the two charts is more clearly articulated.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To begin with', 'On the other hand', and 'Similarly', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly in the third paragraph where the connection between the appliances and the percentages mentioned is ambiguous. The progression of ideas is generally logical, but the internal cohesion within sentences could be improved to ensure a smoother flow of information.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, with attempts to use topic-specific language like 'accounted for', 'remained static', and 'dramatically'. However, there are several inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'electrical appliances owners' (should be 'ownership of electrical appliances') and 'in used' (should be 'in use'). Additionally, there are minor spelling errors like 'fourty' (forty) and 'introducted' (introduced). While these errors do not impede communication, they limit the score as the vocabulary is not used with consistent precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and article usage (e.g., 'the ownership is increased' instead of 'ownership increased', 'in first fourty years' instead of 'in the first forty years'). The sentence structure is sometimes repetitive, and there are issues with subject-verb agreement. To improve, focus on consistent tense usage when describing historical data and ensure articles are used correctly before nouns.
