IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The two graphs represents percentage of electrical appliances and time spend doing housework in house from 1920 to 2019.
Overall, the percentage of electrical appliances being used in homes have increased. Over the years number of refrigerators and vacuum cleaners increased drastically from 1920 before coming to a stagnant level at 100% in 1980 and 2000, respectively. Unlike refrigerators and vacuum cleaners, initially number of washing machine increased till 70% from 1920 to 1960, then after having a slight dip at 60% in 1980 increased till 75% by 2019. So, overall less washing machine numbers increased as compared to the two others.
The number of hours of housework per household decreased in 1920 - 2019. Where from 1920 till 1960 the decrease was drastic (50 to 20 hours), unlike from 1980 till 2000 where it stayed stagnant at 15 hours per week, then finally decreasing in 2019 to 10 hours a week.
In conclusion, the decrease in time spent doing house work has a inverse relation with the growing percentage of household electric applications, which make our work easy and fast. So we don't need to spend more time on household tasks.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all key features of the charts, including the trends for appliances and the decline in housework hours. You successfully identified the main trends and made relevant comparisons, such as contrasting the growth of refrigerators and vacuum cleaners with that of washing machines. However, the analysis could be more precise; for instance, the description of the washing machine trend as having a 'slight dip' at 60% is accurate, but the overall summary could benefit from a more integrated overview of the relationship between the two datasets. The conclusion is slightly subjective, which is less appropriate for an Academic Task 1 report.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs for each chart, and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Overall', 'Unlike', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or repetitive, and the referencing could be smoother. For example, the phrase 'Where from 1920 till 1960' at the start of a sentence is grammatically awkward and disrupts the flow. Improving the variety of linking words would help achieve a more natural progression of ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'stagnant', 'drastically', and 'inverse relation'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'household electric applications' is incorrect; 'appliances' is the standard term. Additionally, 'less washing machine numbers increased' is awkward phrasing. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise academic vocabulary and ensuring that collocations are natural. The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main points clearly, but lacks the sophistication required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('The two graphs represents', 'percentage... have increased') and missing articles ('number of washing machine'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, pay closer attention to pluralization and article usage. The attempt at complex structures is noted, but the accuracy needs to be more consistent to reach the 7.0 band.
