Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graphs illustrate the changes in ownership of electrical appliances as well as number of hours spent doing housework in households in a country from 1920 to 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the charts, identifying the upward trend in appliance ownership and the downward trend in housework hours. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. For instance, the description of the washing machine trend is inaccurate, stating it increased by 30% in 1960, which is not clearly supported by the data provided. Furthermore, the report lacks a clear comparison between the two sets of data, failing to explicitly link the rise in appliances to the reduction in housework time. To improve, ensure data points are cited more accurately and provide a more analytical synthesis of the relationship between the two variables.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally awkward, such as 'Discussing percentage of households...' and 'Assessing the amount of hours...'. These transitions feel like headings rather than integrated parts of a cohesive text. Additionally, some referencing is unclear, such as 'In beginning', which lacks a proper subject. While the overall progression is logical, the lack of sophisticated linking words limits the flow of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. There are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'recorded the upward trend' (should be 'an upward trend'), 'accounted at 40%' (should be 'stood at 40%'), and 'with the time the number of hours felt' (should be 'over time, the number of hours fell'). The student relies on basic descriptive language. To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate more precise verbs and nouns related to data trends, such as 'plateaued', 'fluctuated', or 'a significant decline'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include missing articles ('In 1920, refrigerator stood at...'), incorrect verb forms ('before rose sharply'), and confusion between nouns and verbs ('the number of hours felt' instead of 'fell'). While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement, correct article usage, and consistent tense management would significantly improve the quality of the writing.
