Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all key features of the charts, including the upward trend in appliance ownership and the downward trend in housework hours. The overview is clear and highlights the main trends effectively. However, there are some inaccuracies in the data reporting; for instance, stating the refrigerator started at zero in 1920 is correct, but the description of the washing machine and vacuum cleaner trends lacks precision in specific years. The comparison between the two graphs is attempted but could be more explicitly linked to show the inverse relationship between appliance ownership and time spent on housework. Overall, the response is well-structured and addresses the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two distinct datasets. Cohesive devices are present, such as 'In contrast', 'Turning to', and 'In comparison', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or misused, such as 'In contrast. number of hours', where the punctuation is incorrect. Additionally, the flow between sentences in the third paragraph is a bit repetitive, relying heavily on 'rose' and 'increased'. Improving the variety of linking phrases would enhance the overall cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with terms like 'upward trends', 'surged dramatically', and 'levelled off' used correctly. There are some spelling errors, such as 'houswork', 'houshold', 'fhen', and 'waching', which are distracting. The range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main points, but it lacks the sophistication required for a higher band. To improve, the student should focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring accurate spelling of common academic terms related to data description.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'the other line graph present' (should be 'presents'), 'reached to around' (should be 'reached around'), and 'in the end of the period' (should be 'at the end of the period'). Punctuation errors, such as the misuse of full stops instead of commas, occur frequently. These errors do not impede communication, but they indicate a lack of control over complex structures and minor grammatical points.
