Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to address the task but fails to provide a clear overview of the main trends. While it identifies some data points, the description is fragmented and lacks a cohesive summary of the relationship between appliance ownership and housework hours. Several key features, such as the specific trends for the refrigerator or the comparative decline in housework, are presented in a disjointed manner. The data reporting is often inaccurate or confusing, such as stating the refrigerator reached 100% in 1950 and then again later. To improve, you must identify the most significant trends (e.g., the inverse relationship between appliance ownership and time spent on housework) and present them in a structured, analytical way rather than simply listing isolated figures.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay lacks a logical progression of ideas. While there are paragraph breaks, the internal structure of the paragraphs is weak. Cohesive devices are either missing or used incorrectly, such as the repetitive use of 'stood at' and 'it increase'. The transition between the description of appliances and the housework hours is abrupt, and the lack of clear linking words makes the text difficult to follow. To improve, use a wider range of cohesive devices (e.g., 'consequently', 'in contrast', 'meanwhile') to connect your ideas and ensure that each paragraph has a clear focus, such as one for appliances and one for the housework trends.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic phrases like 'stood at' and 'it increase'. There are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'hourse of housework' and 'reached in his top'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to convey the data with precision. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more varied terminology related to trends, such as 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', 'witnessed a significant rise', or 'a downward trend'. Additionally, ensure you use correct terminology for the data provided, such as 'percentage of households' rather than just 'percentage'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'the chart illustrate'), incorrect verb tenses (e.g., 'it increase' instead of 'it increased'), and awkward sentence structures. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with unnecessary commas and missing full stops. The range of structures is very limited, consisting mostly of simple sentences. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, including correct verb forms and consistent tense usage. You should also aim to combine simple sentences into more complex ones using relative clauses or subordinating conjunctions to demonstrate a wider grammatical range.
