Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response covers the main features of the charts, identifying the trends for appliance ownership and housework hours. However, the analysis is hampered by significant inaccuracies in data reporting. For instance, the claim that the refrigerator started at 0% in 1920 is not supported by the visual data provided, and the description of the washing machine trend is confusing and mathematically imprecise. While the overall trends are identified, the lack of precision in reporting the figures and the failure to make meaningful comparisons between the two datasets (e.g., linking the rise in appliances to the decrease in housework time) limits the development of the response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate, such as the repetitive use of 'in 1920' and 'in 2019' to start sentences. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs is abrupt. The structure lacks a clear flow, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison of the data points effectively. While there is an attempt at paragraphing, the internal cohesion within paragraphs is frequently faulty.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The range of vocabulary is limited and repetitive. There are frequent errors in word choice and word formation, such as 'is significantly rose' instead of 'rose significantly', and 'flactuated' (spelling error). The student relies on basic phrasing like 'proportion of the changes' and 'starting period of time', which lacks the precision required for an Academic Task 1 response. The vocabulary is often used incorrectly in context, which occasionally causes confusion for the reader, particularly when describing the trends in the data.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that impede clarity. There is a lack of control over basic sentence structures, with many sentences being fragments or containing incorrect verb forms, such as 'washing machine households proportion is rise'. Subject-verb agreement is inconsistent, and there is a noticeable absence of complex sentence structures. Punctuation is also problematic, particularly with the misuse of commas and the lack of proper sentence boundaries. These errors are frequent and often cause difficulty for the reader in interpreting the intended meaning of the data.
