Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The bar charts delineate the changes in the percentage of households with electrical appliances such as washing machines, refrigerators, and vacuum cleaners, and the time in number of hours per week spent on housework as washing clothes, preparing meals, and cleaning in a country between 1920 and 2019.
Overall, it is evident that, refrigerators and vacuum cleaners experienced an increase and later reached saturation, while washing machines showed an overall increase with a slight dip throughout the timeframe. Moreover, the number of hours of housework per week per household witnessed a steady decline over the timeframe from 1920 to 2019.
At the beginning of the period, washing machines, vacuum cleaners, and refrigerators stood at 40%, 30% and approximately 1%, whereas the number of housework per week was 50 hours per household in 1920. The percentage of households with refrigerators then rose significantly to 90% and overtook washing machines and vacuum cleaners, while both washing machines and vacuum cleaners reached around 70% in 1960.
In contrast, time spent on houseworks followed a gradual decrease from 50 hours to just over 10 hours per week by the end of the period. What's more, refrigerators and vacuum cleaners reached 100% in 1980 and 2000, respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered all parts of the task by comparing the appliance ownership percentages and the decline in housework hours. The data is well-selected, and the comparisons between the different appliances and the time spent are relevant. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points mentioned are accurate according to the charts; for instance, the starting figures for 1920 (40%, 30%, 1%) are clearly presented, and the overall trends are logically described. The response is well-structured and meets the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and two body paragraphs that group information effectively. You use cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Moreover', and 'What's more' to link ideas, which helps the flow of the text. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed analysis. The progression of ideas is clear throughout the response, making it easy for the reader to follow the comparison of trends over the century. The use of referencing is generally accurate and contributes to the overall coherence of the report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases like 'delineate the changes', 'reached saturation', and 'witnessed a steady decline' are well-chosen and appropriate for an academic report. There is some minor repetition of 'households' and 'timeframe', but this does not impede communication. You use less common items effectively to describe the trends. To improve further, try to vary your reporting verbs and nouns slightly more to avoid repetitive phrasing, though your current range is adequate for a solid score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control of grammar is generally strong. There are a few minor slips, such as 'number of housework' (should be 'amount of housework') and 'as washing clothes' (should be 'such as washing clothes'). However, these errors are infrequent and do not cause any difficulty for the reader. Your punctuation is generally accurate, and the complex sentences used to compare the data points are well-constructed, demonstrating good control over grammatical structures.
