cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The former chart represents how many percentages of households uses electric appliances during the period [redacted phone]. Whereas the latter chart depicts the number of hours a household occupies to complete household chores in a week between [redacted phone].

From the first glimpse of the line chart, it is abundantly clear that initially the refrigerator was not preferred in households at all during 1920. Whereas 30% and 40% of households were using washing machine and vacuum cleaner in 1920. The usage of refrigerator exponentially increased and reached 100 % by 2019. In case of washing machine, the percentage escalated to 60% in 1940 and slight surge of 10% can be noticed in 1960. By 1980, the percentage of households using washing machine plunged to 64% which again reached at 70% in 2000. The percentage stood at 72% in 2019.

Moreover, half of the households were using vacuum cleaner. After that, the percentage drastically increased and turned out to be 100% in 2019. Moving further, in 1920, 50 hours per week were spend washing clothes, preparing means and cleaning the house. However, the number of hours plummeted every year. By 2019, only 10 hours were spent on doing household works.

Overall, the largest percentage of houses owned vacuum cleaner in 2019. On the other hand, in 1920, people spend most of their time washing clothes, cleaning and cooking.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main trends and provided relevant data points to support your descriptions. You covered all parts of the task, including the appliance ownership and the time spent on housework. However, the analysis is slightly mechanical, listing data points rather than synthesising them. For example, the description of the washing machine's fluctuations is a bit repetitive. To reach a higher band, focus on grouping data more effectively to highlight the inverse relationship between appliance ownership and time spent on chores, rather than just listing percentages chronologically.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organised into clear paragraphs, and there is a progression of ideas from the introduction to the overview. You use some cohesive devices like 'Moreover' and 'On the other hand' to link ideas. However, some transitions are a bit abrupt, and the use of referencing could be more sophisticated. For instance, the transition between the appliance data and the housework hours could be smoother to better highlight the correlation between the two charts. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and aids the flow of information.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'exponentially', 'plummeted', and 'drastically'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'how many percentages' is incorrect; it should be 'what percentage'. Additionally, 'preparing means' is likely a typo for 'preparing meals'. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Expanding your repertoire of reporting verbs and adverbs would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'the former chart represents how many percentages of households uses' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'people spend most of their time' (tense inconsistency, as the context is historical). While these errors do not impede communication, they are noticeable. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring consistent tense usage when describing historical data trends.
