Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the task by identifying the main trends for the three appliances and the housework hours. However, the report is largely a list of data points rather than a summary of key features. For instance, the description of the washing machine and refrigerator trends is repetitive and lacks synthesis. While you mention the overall decline in housework hours, you fail to explicitly link this to the rise in appliance ownership, which is a crucial analytical step for a higher band score. To improve, focus on grouping data and highlighting significant trends, such as the inverse relationship between appliance ownership and time spent on housework, rather than listing every percentage point.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The response is organized into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is mechanical. You rely heavily on listing data chronologically, which makes the text feel like a series of isolated sentences rather than a cohesive report. Cohesive devices are limited; for example, you use 'In year 1920' and 'In 1940' repeatedly, which creates a repetitive structure. To improve, use a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases to connect ideas, such as 'Conversely,' 'In contrast,' or 'Following this trend.' Additionally, ensure that your paragraphing clearly separates the appliance data from the housework data to improve readability.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. You frequently repeat words like 'percentage,' 'households,' and 'years.' There are also minor errors in word choice, such as using 'electrical advancements' instead of 'electrical appliances.' While the terminology for the appliances is correct, the range of vocabulary is limited, preventing a more sophisticated analysis. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate synonyms and more precise descriptive language, such as 'fluctuated,' 'remained steady,' 'witnessed a significant increase,' or 'plummeted' to describe the trends in the data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Common issues include missing articles (e.g., 'In year 1920' should be 'In the year 1920'), subject-verb agreement errors (e.g., 'The chart... show' should be 'shows'), and punctuation errors, such as missing spaces after commas. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to affect the overall flow. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring consistent use of articles and prepositions.
