Student answer (Band 6.0)

The chart illustrates the change in ownerships of electrical appliances (Washing machine, Refrigerator and Vacuum cleaner). However affecting the hours spending on housework(per week) in households of a particular country, from the year [redacted phone].

Overall, there was a diminishing rate in the housework hours over the period of 99 years. Due to the increase in usage of electrical appliances, mostly the vacuum cleaner and Refrigerator.

Initially, in the year 1920, people used to spend 50 hours for the house work with 0% use of refrigerator and 30% and 40% use of washing machine and vacuum cleaner. After 2 decades the work hours declined to almost 35%, beacuse of the usage of refrigerator got incresed by 55%.

Till 2019 the weekly hours for housework reached its minimum to only 10 beacuse of avilability of electrical appliances in almost every household. By 1980 and 2020 the refrigerator and vacuum cleaner reached at 100% users with a massive and constant growth rate. The usage of Washing machine after a small decline([redacted phone]) again started increasing and reaching to 75% users.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the charts, identifying the inverse relationship between appliance ownership and housework hours. However, the analysis is somewhat inconsistent. For instance, the claim that housework hours declined to '35%' after two decades is inaccurate, as the chart shows a decline in hours, not a percentage. Additionally, the data points are occasionally imprecise, such as stating '0% use of refrigerator' in 1920 when the chart indicates a non-zero starting point. While the main trends are identified, the lack of precision in reporting data and the confusion between units (hours vs. percentages) limit the score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, and there is a clear overall progression from the introduction to the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Initially', 'After 2 decades', and 'Till 2019', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as the sentence fragment starting with 'However affecting...'. The referencing is generally clear, but the logical flow between the appliance trends and the housework hours could be more tightly integrated to improve the overall coherence of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to describe trends (e.g., 'diminishing rate', 'constant growth rate', 'reached its minimum'). There are, however, several spelling errors such as 'beacuse', 'incresed', and 'avilability', which are distracting. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive, relying on basic descriptors. To reach a higher band, the student should aim for more precise collocations and ensure accurate spelling of common academic terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include 'ownerships of electrical appliances' (should be 'ownership'), 'usage of refrigerator got incresed' (awkward passive construction), and 'reached at 100% users' (incorrect preposition). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of parentheses and sentence fragments. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of errors in basic grammar and sentence construction prevents a higher score.
