cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The first line chart shows changes in the ownership of electrical appliances, while the second shows the amount of time households spent doing housework in one country between 1920 and 2019.

Overall, it can be seen that the ownership of all three electrical appliances increased over the period, while the amount of time spent on housework decreased considerably. Refrigerators and vacuum cleaners became almost universal by 2000, whereas washing machines remained slightly less common.

In 1920, washing machines were owned by around 40% of households, compared with approximately 30% for vacuum cleaners. However, refrigerators were hardly used at all. By 1940, the figures for washing machines and vacuum cleaners had risen to 60% and 50%, respectively, while refrigerator ownership reached about 50%.

Between 1940 and 1960, refrigerator ownership increased sharply to 90%, making it the most widely owned appliance. The figure for vacuum cleaners also rose to 70%, while washing machine ownership reached the same level. After 1960, refrigerator ownership increased to 100% by 1980 and remained at this level. Vacuum cleaner ownership followed a similar trend, reaching 100% in 2000. Washing machine ownership fluctuated slightly but eventually increased to around 75% in 2019.

Meanwhile, the average time spent on housework fell steadily from 50 hours per week in 1920 to just 10 hours in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response effectively covers all requirements of the task. You have clearly identified the main trends for both the ownership of appliances and the time spent on housework. The overview is concise and highlights the inverse relationship between the two sets of data. You have selected key data points to support your descriptions, such as the 1920 starting figures and the 2019 end points, and you have made relevant comparisons between the appliances throughout the report. The information is accurate and well-structured, ensuring the reader can easily follow the progression of the data over the century.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: the introduction, the overview, the detailed breakdown of appliance ownership, and the final summary of housework time. You have used cohesive devices effectively, such as 'whereas', 'compared with', 'meanwhile', and 'respectively', which help to link ideas smoothly. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the transition between the different charts is handled well. The information flows naturally, and there is a clear sense of structure throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You have used a good range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic report. Phrases such as 'almost universal', 'hardly used at all', 'increased sharply', and 'fluctuated slightly' demonstrate a strong command of descriptive language. The terminology related to the charts is accurate. While the vocabulary is precise and fits the context well, it could be slightly more varied to reach the highest band; however, it is more than sufficient for the task and demonstrates a flexible range that allows for clear and precise communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

Your control of grammar is excellent. You have used a variety of complex sentence structures, including subordinate clauses and comparative structures, with a high degree of accuracy. There are virtually no grammatical errors in the text, and punctuation is used correctly throughout. The use of passive voice where appropriate (e.g., 'were owned by') and the correct handling of tense shifts to describe historical data show a high level of grammatical competence. The writing is fluent and error-free, which is characteristic of a high-band performance.
