Student answer (Band 5.5)

THE LINE CHAT ILLUSTRATES THE PROPORTION OF THE HOUSHOLDS WIYH ELECTRIC APPLIANCES AND THE TIME SPEND DOING HOUSE WORK PER WEEK DURING 1920 TO 2019.

THE ELECTRIC APPLAINCES GRADUALLY INCREASES FROM 1920 TO 2019.FROM 1920 TO 1940 THERE IS A LITTLE BIT CHANG. BUT, FROM 1940 TO ONWARD THE ECLECTRIC APPLIANCES SPECIFICALLY REFRIGATOR AND VACUUM CLAENER DRAMATICALLY INCREASES. WHILE, THE NUMBER OF HOURS SPENT DOING HOUSEWROK AMONG INDIVIDUALS DECREASES.

DURING 1920 THE PROPORTION OF ELECTRIC APPLIANCES IS BETWEEN 30 AND 40 PERCENT OF VACUUM CLEANER AND WASHING MACHINES WHILE REFRIGATOR IS AT 0. HOWEVER IN 2019 THE GRADUAL INCREASE IS SEEN IN THE PERCENTAGE OF THE WASHING MACHINE. WHILE THERE IS DRMATIC INCREASE SEEN IN THE OWNERSHIP OF THE REFRIGATOR FROM ZERO TO 100 PERCENT AND ALSO IN THE OWNERSHIP OF THE VACUUM FROM 30 TO 100 PERCENT IN 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the charts, including the trends for appliance ownership and the decline in housework hours. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. While you identified the general trends, you missed opportunities to make more precise comparisons between the appliances or to highlight specific data points effectively. The description of the trends is accurate, but the lack of a clear overview paragraph (the summary of trends should ideally be separate from the introduction) limits the score. You have addressed all parts of the prompt, but the development of the data is somewhat repetitive.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'while' is used frequently). Some transitions between sentences feel abrupt, and the logical flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect ideas more fluidly. The paragraphing is present, but the content within the paragraphs could be better grouped to ensure a more logical progression of information from the general trends to the specific data points.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There are frequent spelling errors throughout the text, such as 'HOUSHOLDS', 'WIYH', 'APPLAINCES', 'REFRIGATOR', 'CLAENER', and 'CACUUM'. These errors are noticeable and detract from the professional tone required for an Academic Task 1 response. To improve, you should focus on using more precise terminology for describing trends (e.g., 'fluctuated', 'plateaued', 'surged') rather than relying on basic terms like 'increases' or 'decreases'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response relies heavily on simple sentence structures. While there are attempts at complex sentences, they are often marred by grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'THE ELECTRIC APPLAINCES GRADUALLY INCREASES' (subject-verb agreement) and 'FROM 1940 TO ONWARD' (preposition error). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the placement of commas and periods. The frequent errors in basic grammar and sentence construction occasionally impede the flow of the text, though the overall meaning remains clear. Increasing the variety of sentence structures and proofreading for basic errors would significantly improve your score.
