IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line graphs present the variations in possessing three electrical appliances and the amount of time spent doing house chores in a specific country from 1920 to 2019
Overall, the line graphs show the rising trend of ownership of washing machine, refrigerator and vacuum cleaners since 1920. While the average amount of time spent doing household work has decreased ever since.
The ownership trend shows that in 1920 the ownership of refrigerators was 0% while washing machine and vacuum cleaners were owned by 40% and 30% of houses respectively. The ownership of refrigerator increased very steeply and 90% of houses possessed a refrigerator by 1960 and the number became 100% by 1980. While washing machines and vacuum cleaners showed a rather comparatively gradual growth of ownership. Ownership of vacuum cleaners increased linearly from 30% 1920 to 100% in 2000. On the other hand the ownership of washing machines increased linearly from 40% in 1920 to 60% in 1960. Then there is a dip and the ownership of washing machines again rises to finally about 70% in 2019.
The second graph represents amount of hours weekly spent doing household chores. The graph illustrates that on average in 1920, 50 hours were spent on household chores in a week. While the number steeply fell to only 20 hours spent in 1960 per week and then the number gradually fell to just 10 hours spent per week in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered all parts of the task, including the ownership of the three appliances and the decline in housework hours. The comparison between the two graphs is well-handled, and you have selected key features such as the 0% starting point for refrigerators and the final figures for 2019. To reach a higher band, ensure that you consistently use precise data points and avoid minor inaccuracies, such as describing the washing machine trend as 'linear' when the data shows a dip and fluctuation.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'while', 'on the other hand', and 'then' to connect ideas. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be improved by ensuring each paragraph has a clear thematic focus. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between the description of the appliances and the housework hours could be smoother to better highlight the inverse relationship between the two datasets.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'variations', 'steeply', 'gradual growth', and 'fluctuated' (implied). There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'possessing' instead of 'ownership' or 'house chores' instead of 'household chores'. While you successfully convey the meaning, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive. To improve, try to incorporate more varied synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease' to avoid relying on the same verbs throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'the number became 100% by 1980' (should be 'reached 100%') and 'the amount of hours weekly spent' (word order). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are occasional missing commas after introductory phrases. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and refining sentence structure to ensure greater accuracy.
