cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line charts provide trends about the two aspects of life in a country from 1920 to 2019: ownership of electrical appliances and time spent doing housework in households.

Overall, the ownership of electrical appliances increased over the period, but after sixty years, the ownership of some appliances showed static growth. The number of hours of housework declined over time and reached the lowest level at the end of the period.

At the start of the period in 1920, the proportion of washing machines and vacuum cleaners owned was 40% and 30%, respectively. While no one owned a refrigerator in 1920. In 1940, refrigerator ownership showed significant growth and jumped from zero to around 50%, while washing machines and vacuum cleaners had slight increases in their share, with 60% and around 58%, respectively. In 1960, the refrigerator surpassed both categories and reached 90% share, while the washing machine and vacuum cleaner had accounted for 70% for each. In 1980, the refrigerator reached the highest level with 100% and still retained that position at the end of the period. Moreover, there was a slight decline in the share of washing machines from 70% in 1960 to around 65% in 1980, but after that it showed slight growth and reached around 72% at the end of the era. In addition, vacuum cleaner ownership followed the upward trend and approached the highest share of 100% and remained unchanged till 2019.

In 1920, there were 50 hours per week for household work, but every two decades the hours had shown a downward trend. At the end of the period, the working hours reached the lowest level with 10 hours per week.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of both charts. You selected key data points to support your descriptions, such as the 1920 starting figures and the 1980 peak for refrigerators. However, the analysis could be improved by making more direct comparisons between the two datasets; for instance, noting the inverse relationship between the rise in appliance ownership and the decline in housework hours. While you covered all parts of the task, some descriptions are slightly repetitive in their structure, which prevents a more analytical approach to the data.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'while,' 'moreover,' and 'in addition' to link ideas. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be improved by grouping the appliance data more effectively to avoid a list-like feel. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the connection between the two charts could be more explicitly stated to enhance the overall flow of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information clearly. Phrases like 'showed significant growth,' 'surpassed both categories,' and 'downward trend' are appropriate for an Academic Task 1 response. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'static growth' (which is a contradiction) and 'at the end of the era' (which is slightly unnatural in this context). To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid repeating the same sentence structures when describing trends.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and your control of grammar is generally good. Most sentences are error-free, and the meaning is always clear. There are occasional minor slips, such as 'While no one owned a refrigerator in 1920' (which is a sentence fragment) and 'the washing machine and vacuum cleaner had accounted for 70% for each' (where 'for each' is redundant). Despite these minor issues, your grammatical control is consistent and does not impede communication.
