IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The two line graphs illustrate the electrical appliances' ownership had changed and number of hours spent in household chores in particular nation from 1920 to 2019.
Overall, it is clear that ownership of refrigerator peaked dramatically. Usage of vacuum cleaner considerably rose. Consequently, time spent in household works declined steadily.
In 1920, popularity of both electrical devices: washing machine (40%) and vacuum cleaner (30%) exhibited moderate popularity among households. With the passage of time, the ownership of vacuum cleaner showed rapid growth from 1940 and became stable after 2000 at 100%. In contrast, ownership of washing machine experienced slight fluctuations around 1960 and ended up just above 70% in 2019. The ownership of refrigerator showed the most dramatic increase, rising from 0% in 1920 to 50% in 1940 and 90% in 1960. It subsequently reached 100% in 1980 and remained at this level until 2019.
on the other hand, the amount of time spent on household chores was highest in 1920, at approximately 50 hours per week that consisted of washing clothes, preparing meals and cleaning. The number of hours spent on these tasks declined as the ownership of electrical appliances increased. In 1960, these numbers rapidly came down around 20%, which further dropped to 10% in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers all parts of the task, providing a clear overview and highlighting key trends for both appliances and housework time. You successfully identified the main features, such as the dramatic rise in refrigerator ownership and the inverse relationship with time spent on chores. However, the analysis could be improved by making more direct comparisons between the datasets, rather than treating them as separate entities. For instance, explicitly linking the plateauing of appliance ownership to the significant drop in housework hours would strengthen the analytical quality of the response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the two main topics. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'subsequently', and 'on the other hand' are used to guide the reader through the data. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be smoother. For example, the phrase 'these numbers' in the final paragraph is slightly ambiguous, as it refers to hours rather than the percentages previously discussed. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'exhibited', 'fluctuations', and 'dramatically' to describe trends. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'in particular nation' (missing an article) and 'household works' (should be 'housework' or 'household chores'). While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, some collocations are slightly unnatural. To reach a higher band, focus on more precise academic phrasing and ensure articles are used correctly with nouns.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'ownership of electrical appliances had changed' (tense inconsistency), 'popularity of both electrical devices: washing machine' (punctuation error), and 'these numbers rapidly came down around 20%' (should be 'to 20 hours'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures and proofreading for minor errors like missing articles or incorrect prepositions would improve your score.
