The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The two line charts compare the percentage of households that owned three electronic appliances: washing machine, refrigerator, vacuum cleaner and the average number of hours spent on housework per week in one country from 1920 and 2019.

Overall, it is evident that ownership of all three appliances increased substantially over the period, with refrigerator and vacuum cleaner becoming almost universal by the end of the period. At the same time, amount of time spent on housework fell dramatically.

In 1920, around 40% of households owned washing machine, while 30% had a vacuum cleaner. In contrast, almost no home had a refrigerator. Refrigerator ownership then rose rapidly, reaching about 90% in 1960 and 100% from 2000 onwards. Vacuum cleaner ownership also increased steadily from 30% in 1920 to 100% by 2019. Washing machines experienced a more gradual rise, climbing from 40% to 70% in 1960 before dipping slightly to 65% in 1980.

The second graph shows a clear downward trend in time devoted to household chores. In 1920, households spent about 50 hours per week on domestic chores. This figure fell steadily to around 35 hours per week in 1940, and 20 hours by 1960. After declining further to roughly 15 hours in 1980, it reached only about 10 hours per week in both 2000 and 2019.
