Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all parts of the task by identifying the main trends in appliance ownership and housework hours. However, the analysis is somewhat repetitive and lacks a clear, integrated overview. While the key features are mentioned, the comparison between the rise in appliances and the decline in housework is underdeveloped. The report relies heavily on listing data points rather than synthesizing the information. To reach a higher band, you should group data more effectively and provide a more analytical summary that highlights the relationship between the two charts rather than just describing them sequentially.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the information. However, the use of cohesive devices is quite mechanical and repetitive. For instance, almost every paragraph begins with 'For [appliance name]' or 'The percentage of...'. There is a lack of varied linking words to connect ideas within and between sentences. While the progression of ideas is clear, the reliance on simple, repetitive sentence structures and basic transitions limits the flow. Improving the use of referencing and a wider range of cohesive devices would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks range and precision. You frequently repeat the same verbs, such as 'increase' and 'decrease', which makes the writing feel monotonous. There is little attempt to use less common vocabulary or synonyms to describe trends (e.g., 'climb', 'surge', 'plummet', 'fluctuate'). While the meaning is always clear and there are no significant spelling errors, the limited lexical variety prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Incorporating more precise terminology for describing data trends would significantly improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'the percentage increase slightly' instead of 'increased'), tense inconsistencies (e.g., 'the initial percentage in 1920 is 40%'), and awkward phrasing. While these errors do not impede communication, they are persistent throughout the text. To improve, focus on maintaining consistent verb tenses when describing past data and ensure correct subject-verb agreement. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures would also help demonstrate better control over grammar.
