Student answer (Band 7.0)

In the illustrated diagram there are two line graphs. The first graph shows percentage of households with electrical changes in the percentage of households owning three specific electrical appliances i.e. washing machine, refrigerators and vaccum cleaner. The second graph illustrates compares the average weekly time spent on domestic chores in a country from 1920 to 2019. Overall, as shown by the graphs there is an inverse relationship which means while the ownership of all three appliances substantially increased, the number of hours dedicated to housework declined significantly. In addition, refrigerators and vaccum cleaners achieved full market saturation, however washing machines remained the least adopted appliance throughout this time period.

To begin with, in the year 1920 40% of the households owned a washing machine. This further rose to 60% in the year 1940. In the year 1960 this proportion rose to 70% after which it slightly fell to 65% in 1980 but quickly rose to 75% by 2019.

However, in case of vacuum cleaner in the year 1920 only 30% of the house holds owned one. Moreover, it steadily increased to 90% in the year 1960 and moving on to the year 1980 it reached a maximum of 100% which remained the same till 2019. In contrast, In 1920 the percentage of households that owned a refrigerator was zero. This drastically rose to 53% in the year 1940 and it further rose to 90% by the year 1960. Furthermore, in the year 1980 it reached a maximum of 100% and continued there till 2019.

On the Other hand, the number of hours spent doing house work per week decreased. First of all, In 1920 50 hours were spent on house chores. However, it was reduced to approximately 35 hours per week by 1940. Moving on it fell to 20 hours by 1960 and eventually to 10 hours per week by 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered all parts of the task, including the inverse relationship between appliance ownership and housework time. The data is accurately reported, and you made relevant comparisons between the appliances. To reach a higher band, ensure your introduction is more concise and avoids minor inaccuracies, such as the initial description of the graphs, which contained some repetitive phrasing. Overall, the response is well-structured and addresses the prompt effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for the appliances, and a separate paragraph for the housework data. You used a variety of cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'To begin with', 'However', and 'On the other hand' to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. The progression of information is clear throughout the text. To improve further, ensure that referencing is always precise; for example, 'In case of vacuum cleaner' would be better as 'In the case of the vacuum cleaner'.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision, using terms like 'market saturation', 'proportion', and 'drastically'. There are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'vaccum' (vacuum) and 'house holds' (households). While these do not impede communication, correcting them would enhance the professional tone of your writing. You have successfully used topic-specific vocabulary related to data description, which is a strength of your response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free, though there are occasional slips, such as 'In the illustrated diagram there are two line graphs' (which is slightly redundant) and minor punctuation errors, like the unnecessary capitalization in 'On the Other hand'. Your control of tense is generally good, accurately reflecting the historical data provided. To achieve a higher band, focus on refining your sentence variety and ensuring consistent accuracy in punctuation and article usage.
