Student answer (Band 6.0)

The charts illustrates comparisons in the percentage of households with electrical appliances and the number of hours spent on housework per week in one country between 1920 and 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all parts of the task and provides a clear overview of the trends. You successfully identified the main features, such as the inverse relationship between appliance ownership and housework time. However, there are some inaccuracies in data reporting; for instance, stating that refrigerators and vacuum cleaners reached 100% by 2019 is not supported by the provided chart, which shows them at approximately 95-100%. Additionally, the claim that washing machines reached 72% is slightly imprecise based on the visual data. To improve, ensure that data points are cited with greater precision and avoid over-generalizing figures.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'whereas' and 'while', to link ideas. However, the progression between sentences is sometimes mechanical. For example, the transition between the appliance data and the housework data could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two distinct charts. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'this trend') is always clear and unambiguous.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'fluctuated', 'proportion', and 'accumulating'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'electricity consuming machinery' (better: 'electrical appliances') and 'time occupied by house chores' (better: 'time spent on housework'). There is also a slight repetition of basic verbs. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and ensure that your word choices are natural in the context of describing statistical data.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('The charts illustrates') and incorrect verb forms ('causing the work hours to reduced'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with capitalization at the start of sentences. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring consistent verb tense usage throughout your report.
