Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line chart demonstrates the variability in the percentage of households with washing machines , refrigerators, and vacuum cleaners, as well as the number of hours of housework per week in households within the specific country from 1920 to 2019.

Overall, the percentage in the starting year was moderate , but during these years it showed a dramatic increase in the graph. However, the number of hours per week was at a peak and steeply fell, reaching its lowest value by the end of the last year.

Firstly, in 1920, the percentage of households with washing machines was 40, which fluctuated during these years ; however, by the end of the period, it subsequently peaked above 70 percent. Meanwhile , refrigerators and vacuum cleaners followed the trend, starting at 0 and 30 percent, respectively, in 1920, and showed a dramatic upward trend, reaching 100 percent in 2019.

On the other hand, housework includes washing clothes, preparing meals , and cleaning. The number of hours per week per household was 50 in 1920, but it fell rapidly until 2019 and came down to 10 hours.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all key features of the charts, including the trends for the three appliances and the inverse trend for housework hours. You successfully identified the starting and ending points and noted the overall trends. However, the description of the washing machine trend is slightly inaccurate; you described it as fluctuating, whereas the data shows a relatively steady increase from 1920 to 2019. Additionally, while you mentioned the appliances reached 100 percent, the chart shows they reached this at different times (refrigerators around 1980, vacuum cleaners around 2000). More precise data reporting would improve the score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'However', 'Firstly', and 'On the other hand' helps guide the reader through the information. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the appliances from the housework data. The progression of ideas is clear, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To reach a higher band, ensure that the relationship between sentences is more fluid and that referencing is consistently precise.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'variability', 'fluctuated', and 'steeply fell'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'the percentage in the starting year was moderate', which is vague. The phrase 'followed the trend' is used correctly, but the overall lexical range is somewhat limited. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations related to data description, such as 'a steady climb' or 'a significant decline'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are some punctuation errors, such as the unnecessary spaces before commas (e.g., 'machines , refrigerators'). There are also minor grammatical slips, such as 'by the end of the last year', which is slightly awkward phrasing. The sentence structures are generally functional, but there is a lack of more sophisticated complex structures that would demonstrate higher control. Focusing on error-free punctuation and varied sentence construction will help elevate your score.
