cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The first line graph depicts information about the proportion of ownership of electrical appliances in a particular country, while the second line graph illustrates about the number of hours spent on housework per week in households over a period of 99 years, from 1920 to 2019.

Overall, it is evident that number of electrical appliances rose in households across the period shown. There was a dramatic rise in ownership of refrigerator, while the use of vacuum cleaner rose substantially. The total time spend on different housework per week fell gradually.

To begin with washing machine, it had a significant use in 1920, accounting for around 40%, which began to rose with time gradually and reached its peak in 1960, accounting for approximately 70%, then fell in next two decades, it rose again in last two decades, reaching at 65% ownership. In 1920, refrigerator was at the point of zero, after that, which began to rose sharply and attained highest percentage, accounting for 100% in 1980, then remained constant at 100% in the next time span. On the other hand, vacuum cleaners were available in 30% households in 1920, which showed a considerable rose, reaching its peak in 2000 and then remained at 100% in next two decades.

The number of hours on housework fell sharply first from 50 hours per week in 1920 to 20 hours in 1960, then fell more in the next time frames but in minimal way. In 2019, just 10 hours spent by households in housework per week.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered all categories (appliances and housework hours) and made relevant comparisons. However, the description of the washing machine trend is slightly confusing due to the phrasing 'fell in next two decades, it rose again in last two decades'. To improve, ensure that the data points are clearly linked to the years provided in the graph. The overview is effective, but ensure that you avoid minor inaccuracies, such as stating the refrigerator reached 100% in 1980 when the graph shows it reaching that point earlier.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs focusing on specific data sets. You use some cohesive devices like 'On the other hand' and 'To begin with' to guide the reader. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical or repetitive. The flow between sentences could be improved by using more varied linking phrases. Referencing is generally clear, but some sentences are slightly cluttered, which affects the overall smoothness of the progression.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'substantially', and 'attained'. However, there are several instances of word-choice errors and incorrect word forms, such as 'began to rose' (should be 'began to rise') and 'considerable rose' (should be 'considerable rise'). These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. To reach a higher band, focus on using nouns and verbs correctly and incorporating more precise collocations related to data trends.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt to use complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and forms (e.g., 'began to rose', 'just 10 hours spent by households'). There are also issues with article usage and prepositions, such as 'in next two decades' instead of 'in the next two decades'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage.
