Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line chart illustrates the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and the amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Overall, the proportion of refrigerator increased gradually and remained at 100%, over the period. However, the share of vacuum cleaner increased constantly and remained at a peak over the years, whereas the percentage of washing machine fluctuated throughout the period. In contrast, it was seen that as the year passed, the time spent on housework by households decreased significantly.
Regarding the percentage of households with electrical appliances. In 1920, the refrigerator was held by 0% of households, which increased to around 55% in 1940. It then increased to 90% in 1960. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all parts of the task and provides a clear overview of the trends. You have successfully identified the main features, such as the rise in appliance ownership and the inverse decline in housework time. However, the overview is slightly inaccurate; for instance, you state the washing machine 'fluctuated', but the data shows a generally upward trend with only a minor dip. Additionally, you incorrectly refer to the time spent on housework as a 'percentage' in the final paragraph, which is a data interpretation error. To reach a higher band, ensure that your summary accurately reflects the data trends and that you distinguish clearly between percentages and hours.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Regarding', and 'Turning to' to guide the reader through the information. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive. The flow between sentences is generally smooth, but the connection between the overview and the body paragraphs could be more sophisticated. Overall, the information is presented in a logical sequence that is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'fluctuated', and 'remained stable'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'reached at 90%' (should be 'reached 90%') and 'house works' (should be 'housework'). While you successfully use some less common items, the vocabulary is somewhat functional rather than sophisticated. To improve, focus on more precise collocations and ensure that you are using the correct terminology for the data presented (e.g., avoiding the misuse of 'percentage' when referring to hours).
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'the refrigerator was held by 0% of households' (a bit unnatural; '0% of households owned a refrigerator' is better) and 'before reaching to just 20 hours' (the preposition 'to' is unnecessary after 'reaching'). Punctuation is generally correct, but there are occasional errors in verb tense and preposition usage. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and these minor slips do not impede communication, which is consistent with a band 6.5 or 7.0 level.
