IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line charts compare the relationship between time associated with housework in homes and percentages of three different electrical devices such as washing machine, refrigerator and vacuum cleaner, owned by the families of a single country over a century from the year 1920 to 2019.
Overall, percentages of all the electrical devices surged drastically over the period, which resulted in drop in working hours per week. Moreover, since the recent few years refrigerators and vacuume cleaners have been used in almost all houses.
First of all, the percentage of refrigerator was 0% in 1920 and it climbed dramatically and reached to 100% in 1980 and remained stick to this number. Same trend can also be seen by vacuum cleaners. About 30% of families had their own vacuum cleaners in 1920, from 2000 to 2019 almost all housholds owned this machine.
The proportion of washing machines also increased gradually despite some fluctuations from 1920 to 2019. It started from 40% in 1920, increased to just 70% in 1960 before dropping slightly over the next 20 years and again rose to just above 70% in 2019. Whereas, the numbers of working hours per week dropped from 50 to just 10 from 1920 to 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all key features of the charts, including the trends for the three appliances and the inverse relationship with housework hours. The overview is clear and highlights the main trends effectively. However, the description of the washing machine data is slightly inaccurate; the text states it reached 70% in 1960 and then dropped, whereas the chart shows a more complex pattern of fluctuation. Additionally, the comparison between the appliances and the housework hours could be more explicitly linked to show the correlation. Overall, the response successfully identifies the main trends and makes relevant comparisons, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.5 or 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the general overview to specific details. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'First of all', and 'Whereas' are used to connect ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different data sets. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between the appliance trends and the housework hours could be smoother to better emphasize the relationship between the two data sets.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, with terms like 'surged drastically', 'fluctuations', and 'proportion' used correctly. There are some minor spelling errors, such as 'housholds' and 'vacuume', and some awkward phrasing like 'remained stick to this number'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band. The use of 'electrical devices' and 'appliances' is repetitive, and more varied synonyms could have been employed to enhance the quality of the writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'since the recent few years' (should be 'in recent years') and 'resulted in drop' (missing article 'a'). The phrase 'Same trend can also be seen by vacuum cleaners' is slightly unnatural. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. The control of punctuation is generally good, but the sentence structure could be more varied to demonstrate greater flexibility and accuracy.
