Student answer (Band 6.5)
The provided line graphs illustrate the number of households using electrical appliances and the proportion of time spent doing house chores in a country from 1920 to 2019. Overall, the amount of time spent in doing housework witnessed a decrease with the increase in usage of electrical appliances over a period of one century.
The proportion of households using vacuum cleaners and refrigerators was just under one-third and practically zero in 1920 respectively. Over the period, both experienced a considerable rise and achieved their peak of 100% in the year 1980 and 2000 respectively and then plateaued.
The number of washing machine users was two-fifths in 1920, and it experienced a steady increase and attained its peak at 70% in 1960. Afterwards, there was a gradual decline in 1980 before reaching its highest point again in 2019.
Similarly, the number of hours of housework per week underwent a significant decline from a half to around one-fifth in 1920 to 1960. Furthermore, there was a marginal decrease and reached its lowest of 10 per week in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all key features of the charts, including the inverse relationship between appliance ownership and housework time. You successfully identified the trends and provided specific data points to support your descriptions. However, there is a slight inaccuracy in the interpretation of the data: you stated that the number of washing machine users was 'two-fifths' in 1920, whereas the chart shows it was closer to 0%. Additionally, the description of housework hours as 'a half to around one-fifth' is slightly vague. To reach a higher band, ensure that data points are read with absolute precision and that comparisons are explicitly linked to the overall trend.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a summary of trends. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Overall,' 'Similarly,' and 'Afterwards' helps guide the reader through the information. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the appliance data from the housework data. To improve, ensure that the transition between sentences is smoother; for example, the jump between the washing machine data and the housework data could be better connected to emphasize the correlation between the two sets of information.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Phrases like 'witnessed a decrease,' 'attained its peak,' and 'plateaued' are appropriate for an academic report. There are some minor issues with collocation, such as 'spent in doing housework,' which is better phrased as 'spent doing housework.' While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, incorporating a few more precise academic collocations would elevate the response to a higher band. Overall, the range is adequate for the task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and error-free, though there are occasional slips, such as 'the number of hours of housework per week underwent a significant decline from a half to around one-fifth in 1920 to 1960,' which is slightly confusing in its phrasing. The grammar is generally controlled, and punctuation is used correctly. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex structures, such as passive voice or participle clauses, to describe the trends more fluidly.
