Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the charts, identifying the key trends in appliance ownership and the decline in housework hours. However, the reporting of data is sometimes inaccurate or confusing. For example, the claim that the washing machine 'faced fluctuation' is not clearly supported by the data, and the description of the refrigerator and vacuum cleaner reaching 100% is somewhat muddled in the final paragraph. While the main trends are identified, the lack of precision in data reporting and the slightly disjointed summary of the figures prevent this from reaching a higher band. The overview is present but could be more clearly integrated.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. There is an attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'On the other hand', and 'Meanwhile'. However, the progression of ideas is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing and repetitive sentence structures. The final sentence of the third paragraph is particularly confusing, as it attempts to group multiple trends together in a way that lacks logical flow. The use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical rather than natural, which impacts the overall coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to describe trends such as 'upward trend', 'decreased significantly', and 'rose'. However, there is a lack of variety and some inaccuracies in word choice. For instance, 'in present time' is not standard academic phrasing, and the repetition of 'households' and 'number of hours' limits the range. There are also minor errors in punctuation and capitalization (e.g., 'Refrigerator' and 'Washing machine' capitalized mid-sentence). To improve, the student should aim for more precise collocations and a wider range of synonyms to avoid repetitive phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('the' before 'refrigerator' or 'washing machine') and issues with subject-verb agreement or tense consistency. For example, 'it usage increased' should be 'its usage increased'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of semicolons and periods. These errors, while not impeding communication, occur frequently enough to prevent the response from reaching a higher band. A greater focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy would be beneficial.
